Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, Jorge Mario Bergoglio would rise from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the modern era. His papacy, beginning in 2013, was marked by a renewed focus on simplicity, mercy, and the Gospel imperative to go out to the margins. From his surprising election to his tireless advocacy for the poor, the environment, and global peace, Pope Francis has continually called the Church to deeper compassion and authenticity. Pope Francis will be remembered for his unwavering emphasis on mercy, his outreach to people of all faiths and backgrounds, and his deep concern for creation. He was a bridge-builder, a shepherd to the peripheries, and a voice of conscience on the global stage. In the wake of his passing, many around the world are mourning his death.
